Blackle, a runoff of an all-black Google, is a search engine aimed at reducing energy waste while searching the Internet. The idea, spurred by a 2007 blog post, was created by Heap Media with the hope to save the wattage wasted with Google’s all-white background. According to that blog, and various other sources, 1,500 megawatt hours can be saved per year if everyone using Google used a black alternative search site.
Blackle’s current count of watt hours saved is 1,219,185.420.
The black search engine doesn’t just stop at saving watts, either. Blackle also provides a tip page for ways to cut costs and save energy in everyday life. Heap Media states that Blackle’s mission is not only to save energy, but to “remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy.” Blackle is also offered in fourteen different languages, including Spanish, Italian and French.
And Blackle is not the only color-changing search engine. Earthle, Greygle, GreenerGLE and Ninja are all plausible alternatives for a greener online lifestyle.
