The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation FTPF is a non-profit organization that plans to plant 18 billion fruit trees around the world. By planting three trees for each person alive, FTPF intends to reverse the effects of climate change – feed hungry people – connect communities – and undo the environmental damage caused by generations of soil damaging farming practices. I love this concept and think it just may work.
I first found out about FTPF’s founder, David “Avocado” Wolfe, when I watched the film Food Matters. He is a raw foodist and an advocate for health, nutrition and the environment. His vision for FTPF encompasses all four of those things, while building relationships within communities for generations to come.
FTPF operates five beneficial programs consisting of:
Fruit Relief – strategically plants fruit trees in areas where the harvest will most benefit hungry, poor, and needy people—such as homeless shelters, low-income communities, and international hunger relief sites.
Fruit Tree 101 – this program brings fruit tree orchards to schoolyards so students can improve the quality of the air and water while creating a source of tasty snacks for decades to come.
Orchards for Animals – improves lives for rescued animals on sanctuaries by providing fruit trees for shade, shelter, enrichment, and healthy diets.
Roots of Recovery – donates fruit tree orchards to facilities where the harvest will help patients and residents with healing—places such as drug rehabs, hospitals, and health centers.
Reservation Preservation – provides fruit and nut tree orchards to low-income communities on Native American Indian Reservations.
All the programs are vital for getting our world back on track, but specifically the Reservation Preservation Program is one that I feel is long overdue. The donated trees will provide much healthier options for people in remote areas with very little income and access to fresh produce.
The trees donated by FTPF are provided with protective fencing and irrigation systems to continue an organic and abundant harvest. The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation has revolutionized gift giving and has shown thousands of people the significance of nutrition and sustainable agriculture. With the help of FTPF and its generous donors, each of us will someday have fresh fruit options and a better planet to live in.
