School just got cooler thanks to 25 year old Shivani Mair. Her super savvy The Careers Surgery website, geared towards helping young people find meaningful careers, just put out one of the first ever social enterprise learning tools for use in schools across the UK. The “Create Yourself – Create Change” DVD Kit includes a 30 minute film that features the stories, challenges, and triumphs of four young local UK entrepreneurs, classroom plans, teacher’s notes, and a slew of interactive activities all in hopes of inspiring the next generation of social entrepreneurs.

“I wanted to use the power of the media to celebrate the positive impact social enterprise makes and ignite a new entrepreneurial spirit in the next generation…This seems to be especially important at this time, when the global financial crisis has forced us all to challenge the way society works,” Shivani explains.

The use of media to empower others is nothing new to Ms. Mair. Shivani has worked as a freelancer in the media industry since 1999. She has developed her reputation as a video and creative producer, working diligently to grow her interactive career website, The Careers Surgery. In May of 2007, Shivani was named one of the top 21 young social entrepreneurs in the UK by the Office of the Third Sector and UnLtd. Currently, she is also an active founder of the Commission for Youth Social Enterprise. The Careers Surgery now has two active brands: Creative Careers Surgery, which provides career info for the creative and media industry and Social Careers Surgery, which provides career info on ethical business.

The “Create Yourself – Create Change” Toolkit is a part of the Social Careers Surgery brand.  Through its use, Shivani hopes spread the good vibes of social entrepreneurship to the classroom. It is young movement so it needs young people…Young people will be able to learn about ethical business, citizenship development, motivation, inspiration, community relationship building, self-awareness and more and they will be able to do so in a way that is creative and easily digestible. This is one class that I certainly wish I had in high school. Way to go UK!
