IDEO , an innovative design consulting firm, has partnered with International Development Enterprises (IDE), Heifer International, International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to design a step by step Human-Centered Design (HCD) guide that allows social entrepreneurs to establish their own Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or Social Enterprise.

The toolkit is divided into five parts:
• The Intro Guide – An overview of the process and its uses.
• The Hear Guide – Collects the stories and designs solutions for customers needs
• A Field Guide/Aspiration Cards – these compliment the Hear Guide
• Create Guide – Assists your team translating the ideas into prototypes
• Deliver Guide – Will get your ideas implemented

They are all available to download in pdf format from IDEO’s website and here.

Human-Centered Design is a concept in marketing that tailors the product for the user, the user is then more likely to choose that product. By applying this philosophy to a guide for NGOs and Social Enterprises it ensures these organizations a greater chance of success.

IDEO has designed everything from Lifeport Kidney Transporters to Marriot’s Towneplace suites. They have also worked with Acumen and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on the Ripple Effect; an organization that helps to bring safe water to people who need it. This latest partnership for the design of the free guide is a great way to open the door for new social enterprises and NGO’s; helping them get a good start from some great people who know a thing or two about social enterprise.

  • A VC can assist the entrepreneur in many ways when the entrepreneur rolls out new products: Positioning of product, (ii) Working with channel partners (iii) Direct sales. The measure of VCs¡¯ contribution is their value creation. The entrepreneur can spend 99 hours on product development while the VC spends only 1 hour introducing the product to customers-and nonetheless, the VC has created more value than the entrepreneur. To understand the pulse of the market, a VC cannot depend solely on industry surveys (just as you cannot judge would-be employees by the resumes they send in). Any industry survey is a representation of the past, and the window of opportunity is apt to have narrowed by the time there is clear data. Surveys may be marginally useful for long-term trends but have limited value for short-term trends. Finding the right people to talk to is critical. A VC cannot be an expert in every field.
