Let’s Get (Nearly) Naked and Save the World

As if the world needs another reason to take off its clothes…

But hey, I have to give props to PACT wear for finally making getting semi-naked the socially acceptable and socially conscious thing to do. Launched on Monday of this week, PACT’s creative and comfortable organic cotton underwear line puts 10% of their profits towards a specific charity. Which charity? Well, that depends on the design of underwear that you decide to purchase. If you’re salty sea girl (and I said salty, not sultry, you pervs), you can select a smooth blue wave pattern in support of Oceana, one of largest international organizations that focus solely on ocean preservation.  If you’re a tree-hugger (again, that’s tree, not trunk!), you can opt for weaving branches to cover your bum and show your love to ForestEthics, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting endangered forests and wildlife around the world. Lastly, if you’re a sucker for the written word (that’s me!), you can buy a vowel, bikini, thong, boy short, or consonant in favor of 826Valencia, a nonprofit mentorship hub for young writers that was brought to life by none other than Dave Eggers.

The underwear designs are the mastermind of San Francisco-based designer, Yves Behar, founder and head designer at fuseproject. His handiwork is not surprising; the majority of Behar’s work at fuseproject tends takes on a thoughtful and global approach. For example, fuseproject was also behind the “One Laptop per Child” design.

That leaves Jason Kibbey and Jeff Denby, the two social entrepreneurs that approached Behar with their wacky motto: “change starts with your underwear” which eventually gave way to their current business plan, PACT.  Not only does 10% of their underwear sales go to  a good cause, they support organic cotton farmers, responsible labor practices, and environmentally friendly production too. Kibbey and Denby are careful to highlight their methodology behind making sustainable underpants in a detailed description on their website (see: ingredients). Because when it comes to underwear, who doesn’t enjoy a little transparency? :)

Okay, I better stop now before this column gets me all hot and bothered, but seriously, I have to ask – what’s next?! A “Save the Whales” campaign sponsored by Trojan? Your rubbers would read something like: “Hey. Everybody wants to be friends with Moby Dick.”  Garters for gay and lesbian rights? Push-up bras for PETA? Fantastic, I’ll take them all!

The PACT is (haha), if you’re going to get intimate with someone, you want to know they genuinely care – and I can’t think of better proof than sociously conscious underwear.
