Over the years, microfinance has surfaced as a powerful new tool and new model for global poverty alleviation. Although the power of microfinance has not yet touched the lives of every poor individual, the concept of microfinance gained significant momentum just a few years ago when Dr.Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for utilizing it to lift the poor. We think the concept is well on its way to revolutionizing the way in which we think about and treat poverty.
To help us propel our thinking about microfinance, we’d like to introduce an upcoming conference, occurring June 15-17 in San Francisco. The Microfinance 2.0 conference is organized to discuss next generation strategies to achieve realistic scalability and lasting social impact and brings together a group of brilliant individuals, organizations and professional organizations. It is sponsored by International Quality & Productivity Center in collaboration with Silicon Valley Microfinance Network and will cover topics ranging from innovative techniques for microfinance firms in the current economic downturn to models for scaling microfinance, and leveraging social media to grow microfinance.
Notable speakers attending the event include Vikram Akula Time’s Top 100 People of the Year 2006 and Founder of SKS Microfinance, Premal Shah President of Kiva, Randy Paynter founder of Care2, and Tracey Turner Founder of Microplace (An Ebay company).
Participating organizations attending the event include:
- Unitus Capital
- Myspace
- Donors Choose
- YouTube
- Accion International
- Facebook and many more.
Writers from SocialEarth will be in attendance to this event so please be on the lookout for updates in the coming weeks and months.
