As you may have noticed, our lingo is becoming increasingly laced with the word micro. For one, Twitter and its microblogging platform has played a significant role in elevating the micro trend. But the micro trend isn’t limited to high-tech startups; lately more and more social enterprises are entering the micro realm. As companies grow and seek new methods for engaging a wider audience, micro-involvement appears to be the answer.
Kiva leverages crowdsourcing to raise micro amounts of money for entrepreneurs, The Extraordinaries leverage mobile phones to solicit micro-volunteerism from users, and now welcome NeoAid.com, a website which generates donations for a cause you care about through your daily online activities. In a nutshell, NeoAid collects micro amounts of funds everytime you perform a search or buy a product from their online storefront. 90% of the money collected is passed onto the charity of your choice, the other 10% covers operating costs.

The service is free to use, and you can generate donations through the following ways:

Search
Search using the NeoAid portal which uses both Yahoo amd Google search engines. The search results are exactly the same as using those search engines individually, but here you generate money for charity.

Shop
The NeoAid mall has over 1,00 merchants from the US and Canada including shops such as Best Buy, Lancome, Barnes and Noble, Nordstrom, and Sony to name a few. What’s great is that the prices are the same as the store website.

Free Offers
The title pretty much covers it- NeoAid will find you the latest coupon offers from their merchant partners. Everytime you redeem a coupon, you generate money for charity.

Free Software
NeoAid offers public software to you with ads from partner organizations. When you use the software program, you’ll generate money for charity.

Their model seems to be working very well. In a short few months, members have raised over $3,000 for 7 non-profit organizations, including:
- Animal Welfare: International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)
- Children: UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund)
- Emergency Aid: Direct Relief International
- Environment: WWF – World Wide Fund for Nature
- Health: City of Hope
- Human Rights: Amnesty International
- Poverty: United Nations World Food Programme (WFP)
Very neat and definitely something to consider on your daily browse online.

Always nice to see another online player funding causes. We do a similar thing with Footprintsnetwork.org. WorldNomads.com ( along with other e-commerce Footprints Network sites) raise funds for community development projects by enabling our travellers to donate every time they purchase travel insurance. We make it opt-out, our view is $2 is not going to break the bank, but when combined with other donations, will make a sizeable impact. So far donation rate is at 91%, we’ve raised ~ $700k and we pass on 100% of the funds. WorldNomads.com covers the cost of development for Footprints as it’s fundamentally our commitment to supporting travel philanthropy.
Thanks Chris,
the other point you don’t mention about Footprints is that it is now availbale for other e-commerce companies to integrate as an API. This is important because it distributes the fundraising across many web sites rather than try to do it from a centralised point. And yes, the 100% pass through of funds is fundamental to the concept.
