In the second part of my interview with Marian Moore, Senior Advisor in Business Development for the social investment fund, Renewal 2, and philanthropic coach, Marian discusses how to move your mission forward as well as the different degrees of activism that come with managing your money. She references Renewal’s Play BIG, a series of invitational conferences for people with significant capital reserves who are seeking to align their wealth more fully with their values as an example of part of the work at that Renewal does. It is also a lot about breaking down the barriers and taboos that come with having a lot of money.
“[People who have a lot of wealth], they’re all down for social change, but they’re also human beings…,” Marian reminds us. “A lot of what I do is helping people figure out who they are and how that is separate from the money while at the same time figuring out how to integrate that money to fit with their concern for the world….it’s complicated terrain.”
It is complicated terrain, but it has been made less intimidating by the work of organizations such as Renewal 2 who continue to help socially conscious investors interpret the map. Rest assured, your monetary power and influence is in good hands. As Marian suggests, we need to be more open about having these difficult conversations on money, class, race, etc. Discussing these complex topics can be uncomfortable, but ultimately, it is essential to creating a more welcoming and social earth.

In addition to Renewal 2, if you are interested in any of the organizations that Marian mentions, links to their websites are listed below.
