It’s one thing to say you’re sustainable, but it’s another to promote total transparency. That’s why Toronto makes my New Year’s Eve list on where to sustainably nurse your hangover – because there aren’t going to be any surprises, bright lies (or lights), and/or screaming children – what you see is what you get. The City of Toronto’s Environmental Plan reads like this:

“In the year 2025, Toronto is a world leader in sustainable urban living. It is a city that is reknowned for the quality of life experienced by its residents. Civic leaders credit the city’s thriving economy to measures taken to protect the environment. Decision-makers and residents understand that long-term sustainability requires a healthy natural environment, a healthy economy, and healthy communities.”

To make sure these goals are being fulfilled, Toronto has created a totally transparent Sustainability Roundtable that keeps people abreast of whether they are meeting their target goals. Toronto is a haven for green roof installations, urban forestry, and creative water management. In May 2005, it was even selected as one of the Seven Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development by the United Nations University. Aside from getting the green tour, you can also check out the St. Lawrence Market (one of the world’s best 25 food markets), Harbourfront, the CN Tower, and of course, the Toronto Zoo. Do it.
