Volkswagen Speaks to the Inner Child in All of Us

The Fun Theory is simple: the best way to change people’s behavior for the better is to make what previously required effort to become enjoyable. Ideas like the Bottle Bank Arcade Machine, the Piano Stairs, and The World’s Deepest Trash Bin were all put into application around Europe and the results have been obvious. People like to have fun. There’s still a little bit of child in all of us and the Volkswagen Fun Theory Competition is the perfect, socially productive outlet for its expression.

From October 1st until December 15th, anyone can submit an invention that changes people’s behavior for the better – environmentally or otherwise – through the use of fun. The best Top 10 inventions, selected by a jury, will be announced in Stockholm in mid-December with the winner receiving a grand prize of 2,500 euro. Not surprisingly, the jury is full of social entrepreneurs such s Amelie Silferstolpe, the recipient of the Veckans Affarers 2009 social capitalist award and Johan Tell, a well-known Swedish environmental writer.

My current favorite submission happens to be the Bottle Bank Arcade Machine posted above. In general, fewer people recycle glass than bottles or cans, so a few innovators set about to making the bottle recycling process a bit more entertaining. Take a look and when you’re done here, peruse through the rest of them. After all, it’s Thanksgiving, and who doesn’t want to have a little fun?
