In its May 2009 issue, Natural Health magazine will honor the 10 greenest companies of 2008.
The Natural Health Green Choice Awards will identify large, multinational companies with tremendous reach and influence that are implementing substantial, systemic green initiatives and inspiring others to follow suit. Actor and environmental activist Ed Begley, Jr. will be a special guest editor for the issue. He and his wife Rachelle Carson will grace the issue’s cover. Begley, Jr., will present the Natural Health Green Choice Awards to ten winners at a cocktail reception at Tavern on the Green on May 5, 2009.
The 10 companies were selected for conserving energy, saving water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, shrinking carbon footprints, and reducing waste at unprecedented levels. One of those companies is Whole Foods Market.
Whole Foods Market, based in Austin, Texas won the 2009 Green Choice Award for their dedication to substantial, earth-friendly initiatives which inspire other companies to follow suit.
According to their website “we believe we have a responsibility toward all entities involved in our business: our customers, shareholders, team Members, suppliers, the environment and, not least of all, our community. To us, community transcends the boundaries of our cities to the places from which we source our products, many of which are in developing countries.”
They carry out this vision on a global scale; Whole Foods Market donates 1% of all retail sales to the Whole Planet Foundation. The foundation empowers entrepreneurs in developing countries by providing micro credit and tangible support. Founded in 2005, Whole Planet Foundation issued its first grant to Grameen Trust for the operation of a microfinance initiative in Costa Rica.
