When I first found out about this year’s Microfinance USA conference from my friends over at California-based microlender Opportunity Fund, I wanted to go for one reason and one reason only: the conference’s focus on the U.S. side of the industry. Those who know me from my Main Street Microfinance posts know that I’ve got a chip on my shoulder about how U.S. microfinance often lies in the shadow of its international counterpart. But not at this conference—at Microfinance USA, American microlenders, loan recipients, and industry experts will take center stage.
The other beauty of this two day summit is that the conference planners are working to ensure that everyone interested or involved in the industry will find relevant information and sessions. There will be academic discussions for practitioners, networking and special sessions for students and job- seekers, and visits with actual loan recipients for the curious.
Maria Shriver, the oh-so-glamorous First Lady of California, is giving the keynote speech. And San Francisco MUST be amazing in late May (20-21 to be exact). I’ll stop there, and will leave you to check out the video, where Shaolee from Opportunity Fund explains why Microfinance USA will be this year’s not-to-miss event.
Hope to see you there!
